Why Purpose Beats Goals

Mar 1, 2026

I used to be obsessed with goals. Hit this weight. Reach this body fat percentage. Make this much money. And I'd hit them. Then I'd feel empty. I'd set a new goal, chase it, hit it, feel empty again. It was a cycle that never ended.

Then something shifted. I stopped asking 'what do I want?' and started asking 'why does any of this matter?' That question changed my life. Because when you connect your work to something bigger than yourself, you stop needing external wins to feel fulfilled.

My purpose is simple: use what I've been given to serve others. That's why Phredybill exists. That's why the Hand of God Project exists. Every rep I do, every post I write, every program I build ties back to that purpose.

Goals are useful. I still set them. But they're tools, not the destination. Purpose is the destination. When your purpose is clear, the goals become obvious. And when things get hard, purpose is what keeps you moving. Goals can be abandoned. Purpose can't.

If you're reading this and you feel stuck, try this: stop thinking about what you want to achieve. Think about who you want to become and why. Write it down. Say it out loud. Let it sit with you for a week. I promise it will change how you approach everything.
